  • Last night, my kids and I spent hours together looking through old photos and videos of themselves, laughing and remembering wonderful times. Like when they started crawling, walking, screaming gibberish, dancing…

Then we stumbled across one of my absolute favorite photos… Me and their dad sitting under a red and white umbrella during our engagement photo shoot in May 2009. Before that, we’d been together since 2006.

17 years.

The kids were utterly fascinated by those chic photos, how we both looked, the height difference when we embraced, the laughter and joy emanating from them.

Then my son (the younger sibling) asked me why I chose to leave. He still sees me as the one who chose to make us all sad by breaking us apart.

Two years post divorce, my daughter fully understands why we eroded, but my son is still processing in his own way. Trying to reconcile all that past joy together with our current reality.

Divorce is often a messy process of grieving what could have been, especially when kids are involved. Oftentimes we lose, shrink and erode ourselves because societal pressure or culture wants us to stay for the sake of the kids… the most dangerous thing parents can model in terms of skewing what a safe and loving relationship looks like.

Generation X knows this as many grew up with parents who stayed for their sakes.

Divorce also means showing them that they are our utmost priority, they were born from love, and that we would continue to make them feel fully loved and safe.

Even if the very best yet heartbreaking way to do that is apart.

  • This weekend was one of the most incredible career highlights for me. I was one of 41 photographers selected and my @theafroswede photos, five of thousands submitted to be part of @hasselbladfoundation’s Fotosalongen 2025 - May 23 to September 28.

When I finally saw that massive poster of @rukiamazera1 hanging on the wall of the Gothenburg Museum of Art, I cried because this project is so much bigger than my own personal dreams. It’s about the most invisible members of society getting the most visible spot in town. It’s about saying ”we matter too” in the most spectacular way. It’s about showing what integration feels like when we can fully embody all aspects of our identities without having to choose.

Thank you @dragana.vujanovic.ostlind, @somenblixt and @hasselbladfoundation for this incredible honor. My heart is full and I’m still reeling from an incredible opening. To judges @evgud, @paul_hansen64, and @paulinebenthede, thank you for seeing and understanding my vision for @theafroswede. Thank you @ellirk for making the entire process extremely seamless. Thank you @madsalexander and my @hasselblad family for your continued support.

This is only the beginning 🙏🏾🩵💛

To my fellow photographers who are also exhibiting including @ginosarfatti, @elli.asker.studio, @rohanasin, @jenny_rova, @noralorek and every single one of you, raising a glass in toast. Stort grattis!! 🎉

  • “What colours do you want for your book cover?”

The artist and photographer in me already knew the exact complementary color combination I wanted over a year ago: Blue + Orange.

When I turned in the final edited manuscript of BITTER HONEY @bitterhoneybook, I knew I’d written my most cathartic and complex piece of storytelling. The exact feeling coursed through me when I finished @ineverymirror: Goosebumps.

And I knew I had to celebrate its birth the way the tremendous hard work, sweat, and sleepless nights that went into its conception deserves.

So I started putting a little bit of money aside all of last year. Bit by bit. Little by little. To properly celebrate the book community that holds me as an author, that champions my stories, and that does the grassroots work so organically and so graciously to bring my books via word-of-mouth to a broader audience despite industry headwinds.

This celebration was my massive “thank you” to my wonderful UK book community. No bare minimums. The work we all do often gets undervalued, underestimated, and underappreciated.

I see every single one of you. You matter. Your voice matters. You are not a number. Your number of followers doesn’t determine your worth.

And may you continue to grow from strength to strength.

Thank you @hayevents for flawlessly executing my vision
Thank you @theivorygaze for that incredible food spread
Thank you @forevereventstyling for that beautiful photo wall
Thank you @headofzeus for donating some books to my party

Thank you all for showing up for me. My gratitude knows no bounds 💙🧡

This weekend was one of the most incredible career highlights for me.

“What colours do you want for your book cover?”

“What colours do you want for your book cover?”
