Postcard: The Wedding Guest

dsc_03172

Attending a friend’s wedding in Lagos, Nigeria was a prime spot for people watching. Guests arrived in various , colorful traditional attires. One of my favorites was this little guest wearing a small gele – Yoruba headtie – paired with traditional lace sewn in an English style.

Her curious look was very questioning – almost along the lines of “Put that camera away! Can’t you see we’re at a wedding?!”

  4. Beautiful as always. My best friend is from Ethiopia, my child’s “African Auntie” and she got her lots of kid’s picture books about African dress. I learned as much as she did.

I always felt honored to be part of things where the family would gather and dress in traditional ways. Makes me look forward to our time in Africa.

  5. beautiful. this little girl looks like an absolute G.

  6. hey julie, don’t underestimate yourself! =) many people think they can’t pull off the gele or do the lovely prints/ fabric but i beg to differ. it does feel great to dress up “regally” every once in a while.

  7. Do you think I’d look more sophisticated with a gele? I’d like to think so, but I don’t think I can pull it off. I think the same thing about Frida Kahlo’s jewelry. Ah… guess I’m stuck in jeans and t-shirts.

  8. Terrific portrait of this girl, her intense stare make you wonder what she’s thinking 🙂
