  • I almost miss my ride. The droning of the engine reaches me across lapping waters. I catch myself. Semaphore direction up. Skärgården. The archipelago. 

Destination. Grinda.

Owner Jan greets me at the wraparound veranda of Grinda Wärdshus, a margarine-yellow art-deco villa once summer residence of Henrik Santesson, the Nobel Committee's first director, who bought Grinda in 1906. From our perch, a lush expanse of the island, a nature reserve now owned by the City of Stockholm, comes into view. Time stills. Monochromatic photos of the Santesson family grace dimly lit spaces and the walnut-brown interior facade of the inn, preserving history. “My Swiss parents fell in love with the archipelago,” he shares. “So I grew up on a boat.” Decades spent working in tourism before settling here in 1994, Jan saw Grinda’s potential as Stockholm’s retreat. Eight year-round residents swell to 60 during summer to cater to guests camping along its northern shore or renting cabins in Södra Grinda. 

Over skagenröra (shrimp salad toast), a summer staple with red onions, lemon, dill and bleak roe, Jan’s partner and co-owner Annika Hanson swings by to say hello. Their two sons Hugo and Axel are also in the family business on the food and beverage side. Locals make the 90-minute scenic ferry ride from town simply to dine at Grinda’s award-winning kitchen on charred tuna cabbage salad with yuzu- lime dressing, fiskgryta (fish stew), and sea buckthorn cheesecake washed down with its 1906 house lager. Afterwards, I stroll around Grinda’s pintsized harbour with Jan and his two shiny black labradors. He throws a twig into calm waters. They dart, splash, and winner Sante races back to Jan with twig in mouth, panting. It’s pure idyll. We soak it up now. The crowds are coming soon to relax.

  • “I love being able to open up our windows, plan great evening parties, and extend our warmth into the street,” Peruvian-Swedish restaurateur Erika Goytizolo says of spending her summers in Stockholm. 

I’m sampling her Swedish Grebbestad oysters topped with a celadon-green Peruvian Chalaca whipped foam of cucumber, lime, and jalapeño. Maybe a touch of vanity keeps me frequenting Erika’s down-to-earth Östermalm fusion spot @canta_lola, a personal favourite and my namesake.

Considering one-in-three Swedish residents have a foreign born parent, the city’s culinary scene reflects this. “I’m seeing more diversity and risk-taking,” Erika shares as I try cured rainbow trout and Chalaquita salsa made with orange Aji Amarillo pepper, fennel, miso, and coriander oil. 

Guests trickle in, in full view of her open plan kitchen. A patron stops by Erika for a peck on each cheek. “We need passionate independent entrepreneurs. Food definitely tastes better when it’s created in the hands of people with dreams, passion, and flavour,” she smiles.

I’m sampling her Swedish Grebbestad oysters topped with a celadon-green Peruvian Chalaca whipped foam of cucumber, lime, and jalapeño. Maybe a touch of vanity keeps me frequenting Erika’s down-to-earth Östermalm fusion spot @canta_lola, a personal favourite and my namesake.
