James Ungalaq, the Canadian Inuit guitarist from the legendary First Nations band Northern Haze, poses for a portrait at the Arctic Sounds @arctic_sounds music festival in Sisimiut, Greenland.

In the 1980s, James and his bandmates made history when they released what is widely believed to be the first Indigenous-language rock album in history.

After a wind delay, our helicopter to Narsarsuaq finally took off. The pilot informed us he would be taking “the scenic route” to avoid turbulence — flying close to the mountain face. Once airborne, the craft mimicked the gentle gliding of a hot air balloon with nary a bump.

Narsarsuaq is home to one of the most dangerous approaches in the world due to strong crosswinds in the fjord, a short runway, and little space for pilots to maneuver.

When we landed and I stepped onto solid ground, the gusting winds whipping my hair, I fully realized and truly appreciated the expertise of pilots who navigate the country’s turbulent and often violent weather, which can strand travelers for weeks.

  • It’s publication week and it’s been surreal to get to this point.

My sophomore novel EVERYTHING IS NOT ENOUGH @notenough.book will be published this week by @williammorrowbooks Oct 24 and @headofzeus Oct 26 ❤️

I am so grateful first to God for this incredible journey and lifelong dream towards becoming a novelist whose work makes people feel seen, heard, and acknowledged.

To my incredible publishing teams (WM - Asanté, Emily, Beatrice, HoZ - Maddy, Sophie, Ayo) and everyone on Team @notenough.book, thank you for exemplifying what true teamwork should look and feel like 🙏🏾💖🧡💚

To my agent @craig_literary, friend and writing mentor @theleighshulman, all my friends, family, and dear readers who continue to support my work, my gratitude knows no bounds. Thank you ❤️

To my two beautiful kids, all I do, I do for you so we’re having the uncomfortable conversations in society that will finally create the fertile soil for you to fully bloom and thrive.

  • You were shocked. You saw it coming.

You cried. You've run out of tears.

You've prayed. Prayers escape you.

You've donated. It still doesn't feel enough.

You've screamed. You've lost words.

You've judged others for not screaming at your own decibel.

You've watched from afar. You've felt the dust, shrapnel, and loss of your loves.

You're witnessing genocide. You're witnessing rage.

You feel unmoored in your home. You've lost your home.

You feel helpless. Others need your help.

Living life seems trivial. Getting up to routine feels hollow.

But when you feel helpless, you must.

You must live.

You must live in honor of those who can't.

You must stop, assess those mundane routines which mimic life, and ask yourself the hard question.

Stop, look in the mirror.. Are you living?

Are you truly showing up in life and living?

For those we've lost.

Over centuries, over decades, over weekends.

Who would love one more day.

To smell the top of their children's hair.

To kiss the cheeks of their parents.

To pull their friends into wordless hugs.

When you've done all you can, all you can afford, all you can continue to do every day...

All that's left is to live.

You must live the gift you've been given.

You can no longer keep it wrapped.

  • This award-winning photo was shot in Iceland on an old model iPhone 5.

It was part of the portfolio that made me a @societyofamericantravelwriters Bill Muster Travel Photographer of the Year.

I now travel with an incredible @hasselblad X1DII mirrorless camera.

Being a travel photographer is more about honing your instincts, observational skills, and your visual voice.

That’s why I always say the best camera is whatever you currently have on you when the moment is happening.

The gear will come later.

And once it does, it will elevate the quality of your imagery exponentially.

But your compositional eye is what dictates that base.

I’ll be sharing more about our upcoming @geotravelermedia photography experiences including our Aurora Experience in Sweden (LINK IN PROFILE).
