The Crawfish Experience

Crawfish

Out in the lush green backyard, old wooden tables are strewn together and covered with white linen well worn from use. Cozy wool blankets, some frayed with age, line wooden benches. Glass plates from various collections are laid out and topped with white paper napkins.

The warm glow from lanterns and candles flicker against red wine bottles, little packets of mini whisky bottles, and sparkling water. Loaves of freshly baked walnut, olive and tomato bread lay next to spicy blocks of moldy cheeses on wooden serving slabs. A pasta and pea salad joins the quiche made with sundried tomatoes, spinach, and olives, rounding out the sides.

Next to plates are photocopied sheets of old Swedish drinking songs. A song is collectively belted out to start us off.

Friends – old and new – dig into glass bowls of crawfish,  hungrily cracking red shells. We pull at tender orangish pieces of flesh while sucking salty juices from the shells.

A few drops of rain arrive later, and within minutes, a makeshift tarp is made from boat sails tied to trees and propped up with wooden sticks.

Unpretentious and simple: this ritual of a warm August evening crawfish party.
