Postcard: The Beauty from Belgrade

Woman in Belgrade, Serbia - Photography by Lola Akinmade Akerstrom

Just finished editing photos from Serbia and came across this memorable one. I ran into this lady at the fruit and flea market in Belgrade. Her eyes drew me first and we were both excited to meet each other though we spoke no common language. After a few minutes of interacting with her and some other traders, I asked for a picture and noticed she was giving me a closed tight-lipped smile. The same one someone with braces gives because they feel embarrassed to be wearing braces as an adult.

My challenge?

Getting her comfortable enough with me to show me what she felt she had to hide which made her even more beautiful.

  1. I have noticed that a lot of Europeans don’t want to smile in their pictures. But I am glad you were able to get this lady to “laugh with her eyes”!!! Those are the best kind of pictures because you can feel the emotion’s coming through the picture.

  2. that tattoo reminds me of mama’s. looks like she has many good stories to tell!
