I can’t stop looking at Ann-Marie’s hair.
“I’ve been coming here for a few years now,” she says, rearranging glass jars of homemade marmalade and jams along her own half of the wooden table she’s sharing with Lisa-Marie.
That shade of red. What is it?
“You should try this one,” she opens up some strawberry-rhubarb marmalade, digs a plastic teaspoon into it and scoops up a generous serving. “I get the rhubarb free from my neighbors. They know I love to make jam as a hobby and so they drop by with some ingredients like rhubarb stalks growing in their yards.”
Burnt siena? Burnt-orange? Darn, what color is that?
I taste the rhubarb and immediately want something else. She reaches for a different mixture – vanilla and nectarine.
“You know I used to be married to an African. He’s from Morocco,” she adds, scooping up some marmalade in the same fashion. “It just didn’t work out, but I’ve traveled there [Morocco] so many times.”
Copper red maybe?
I grab the vanilla-flavored spoon and down its contents. This is different. It works for me. I want a jar of it.
I look around, distracted. We are in subarctic Sweden. In Jokkmokk. Population 3,000. I’d walked the length and breadth of the small town a couple times already, and was running low on ideas of who and what to photograph. My thoughts were now on color. Color anywhere.
It had to be copper red!
She senses them somehow.
“You and my daughter would get along,” she adds. “She also loves to take photographs. More abstract shots. If she were here, she would look for something offbeat. Maybe bend low, and snap a photo of everyone’s feet as they walked by.“
Another view of the market that would tell me so much.
I catch the twinkle in her eye as she continues arranging marmalade, and I hand her 40SEK for my vanilla-nectarine.

@Holidays in India – Thanks
@Joshy – Strawberry preserve? It looks a little more orangey than pink
@Sandra – Thanks and see you soon!
@Jen – Oooo. I didn’t even think of those. Very cool.
@Bluegreen Kirk – Thanks. Still no idea. I just call it copper red.
Did you ever figure out what color that was? Love the photos and the marmalade looks delicious.
Ruby? Carmine? Scarlet? Pomegranate? …How about Marmalade?!?! LOL! Love this post!
Gorgeous photos Lola! I love the portraits from the previous entry too!
I would call that color strawberry preserve, or perhaps creme de roja.

@Ieishah – Thanks! After speaking with her for quite some time, any minuscule preconceived notions were out the window (even though I consider myself very open-minded in terms of interactions) .
It’s all about the exchange. Makes me look at the photo with new eyes. Elegant post!
Oh wow, that sounds delicious!!!
Love how much you convey through a (seemingly) simple exchange.
