National Geographic Traveller UK - Huskies Photography by Lola Akinmade Åkerström

The photograph above of Siberian Huskies in Swedish Lapland is currently being featured as a double-page “Big Picture” spread in the current Jan/Feb 2012 issue of National Geographic Traveller (see feature), and I almost passed out when the assistant art director sent me my PDF copy.

My photo? In National Geographic? Spanning two pages?

Equally as exciting is that I also have another photo featured in the Jan/Feb 2012 Us version – National Geographic Traveler (see feature).

Though I’ve written for both magazines before, this was different. This was exciting on a whole ‘nother level. That instantly recognizable yellow frame sets the bar for travel photography all over the world in my opinion.

I instantly morphed into that kid who, amongst other lifelong dreams, also dreamed of someday going on assignment for that yellow frame while she was growing up in Nigeria. Though this does not mean I’m an “official “photographer for them, it’s the additional motivation I need to keep inching closer and closer to that possibility.

That dream.

  • @Nailah – Thanks so much!

    @Eva – Thanks E!

    @Robyn – Haha. Thanks!

    @Natalie – I squealed as well. Thanks!!

    @Kristin (Camels & Chocolate) – Thank you, thank you!

    @Shade – Thanks! The interesting thing is, kind of like people, we all know when we’re being watched. Maybe a sort of 6th sense so within a few seconds, we usually turn in the direction we feel we’re being watched from. Same thing with this husky.

    @Lily – Amen! And congrats to you as well on your assignment for the UK mag!

    @Chuck – Thanks so much! I too am self-taught. Will definitely keep working towards those goals and dreams.

    @Nena – Thank you! I’m definitely a believer and have strong faith in God. It simply is overwhelming when one surrenders all control to a much higher power.

    @Felicia – Thanks lady! Can’t wait to see you again.

    @Good Naija Girl – Thank you so much and I can never forget your kindness during the North Pole expedition bid.

    Grattis ))

  • Congratulations!!! Amazing photographer and photograph! I’m so very happy for and proud of you!!!! Get it, Lady!!!!

  • Dear Lola, the pictures are beautiful, special, the one with the dog’s look breathtaking. I am overwhelmed by seeing how wishes sent out into Universe, to God, to however you wish to call the Source of Life – materialise in our reality…especially when they come from the child’s heart…hiding the very core of our purpose…simply beautiful…all doors are open now, just go…

  • Abi

    Woohoo! That is VERY exciting. Congratulations and well deserved.

  • Congratulations!! What a great photo! I can’t even imagine how exciting it is to be published in NG, but I do know the thrill of having your work accepted for publication. Being totally self-taught, I can vividly remember the thrill of having an art director praise then accept your photos for publication, then your first magazine cover! Keep the thrill alive and keep working (not quitting like I did).

  • So So happy for you Lola!!! Indeed, every travel photographer’s dream!!! Congratulations and may your year continue to be even more awesome!!

  • Shade
