Bessie A. Winn-Afeku is a wanderlusting photographer,
How would you describe your style of photography?
My style is timeless, revealing, and communicative portraiture. I specialize in creating images that are inspired by music, beauty, and honest moments. The majority of my clients are creative entrepreneurs.
Can you share the backstories behind these two photos?
The first image is of bicyclists. This photo was taken in Brussels. I was driving behind some bicyclists and was in a hurry to get to my destination. Because I am not that confident of a driver when I am not driving in the states, I did not feel comfortable driving around them for the road seemed too narrow for me. So, for what seemed like forever, I slowly followed behind them. In those few moments (which was only about maybe a minute) I got a short lesson in patience and being aware and trusting of the moments that we are given in life.
And there are just certain moments in life that no matter how much we try to rush them, we can’t.
The second image of the young lady is one of my favorites because the photo actually “made itself”. Before our session I had an idea of how I wanted the images to turn out. But as the session went on, my subject just pretty much fell into place so to speak and revealed so much of her soul to the camera.
What are your dreams as a photographer?
One of my goals is to have my two photography projects that I am currently working on to be featured in exhibits within the next two years. Another goal is to go on an international tour as a personal photographer for one of my favorite artists.
The “Snapshot” series are mini interviews with fellow black travel photographers to inspire others and myself. As I’ve navigated the world of travel photography over the last few years, I’ve found very few fellow photographers of color who are also doing this professionally with a heavy focus on travel documentary. So this inspirational resource of professional travel photographers of color is a way for people to always find us. Please get in touch if you’d like to be featured or know of others to feature.
