Snapshot: Kemkem Casinelli

Kemkem Casinelli

Kemkem Casinelli is a travel photographer and lifestyle blogger. She was born in Nigeria, and moved to the U.S as a teenager. She went to pharmacy school in Boston, and lived in Los Angeles, and Houston where she practiced. In 2013, she and her husband Federico, a pro photographer decided on early retirement, sold most of their stuff, moved to Malta, and are now based in Malaga, Spain, with their two rescue beagles.

Can you share the backstories behind these two photos?

We were at the San Anton Gardens in Malta. We saw this swan when we came in, and waited for the longest time for it to move, but no dice. We  gave up and continued touring the grounds. On our way out, we doubled back. It finally indulged us by spreading its wings and flying from one side of the pond to the other, as if to say.. “Are you happy? Now piss off!” and l thought that was so cute.

We were on a touring bus that made a stop at the Citadel to let people off and were told it was only going to stop for a moment. I left my bag with my husband, and dashed out to snap a picture from the top, just making it back in time. It turned out to be one of my favorites, shows Buda on one side, and Pest on the other.

What are your dreams as a photographer?

My dream would be to keep doing what l love, travel, improve my photography and find a way to monetize it

The “Snapshot” series are mini interviews with fellow black travel photographers to inspire others and myself. As I’ve navigated the world of travel photography over the last few years, I’ve found very few fellow photographers of color who are also doing this professionally with a heavy focus on travel documentary. So this inspirational resource of professional travel photographers of color is a way for people to always find us. Please get in touch if you’d like to be featured or know of others to feature.
