38 Favourite Street Photos from Mantua, Italy

Part of the #inLombardia365 campaign in collaboration with iambassador and Explora Tourism.

My return trip to Lombardia was way too short considering I love slowly whiling away hours upon hours in a new place so I can create memorable photos. Especially in this case, to capture a ton of street photos from Mantua. This only means I have to go back and explore more of its corners in depth.

Beyond marveling at its amazing Italian Renaissance art history and eating my way through Mantua (more on that later), I spent some time strolling its streets, checking out its waterfront gardens and green spaces, and soaking up the city’s overall laidback vibe.

Located in the Lombardy region of Italy, east of Milan and Verona, the city is currently the 2016 Italian Capital of Culture and it dates back to the 14th century. In 2007, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its architecture and timeless frescoes. Pop into any of its main architectural marvels such as Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Te, Teatro Bibiena, to name a few, and you’ll see why.

Though it is your quintessential Italian city filled with narrow cobblestoned lanes, buildings weathered through centuries, middle-aged locals cycling by on street bikes, and outdoor cafés with patrons sipping espresso, Mantua is a lot less busy than the major cities of Milan, Rome, Venice, and Florence which are often chocked neck-to-neck full of tourists. It is Italy after all.

In fact, it felt like Mantua and its beauty was forgotten until recently. Its main square, Piazza Sordello, was never packed while I was there. There wasn’t a maddening rush when I took a guided tour of the palaces, though later in the morning, groups of Italian tourists formed a line out through the door. Besides the occasional foreign accent, it seems Mantua was a getaway within the country for Italians themselves. Their own special secret citybreak not yet flooded by foreign tourists.

So I wanted to share some of my personal favourite street photos from Mantua, Italy, and a few special moments during my time in this memorable little city.

I’ve been to Italy many times but sadly, I’ve never heard of Mantua! I love your street photographs of ordinary people just going about their day-to-day every day life especially the guy with the lovely little Spaniel in his environmentally-friendly shopping bag! I also like the young couple on the deckchair looking out on the lake.

    Very nice!
