I am on @cntraveler’s Women in Travel Power List, a @satwfoundation Bill Muster Travel Photographer of Year, a @hasselblad Heroine, and have won/been awarded for my photography over the years, including PDN World In Focus, @travelphotographeroftheyear, and @foodphotoaward. My big break as a travel photographer came through a photo essay on @bbcnews, and then subsequently collaborating with @natgeotv and @southafrica Tourism. I was also one of roughly 300 photographers represented by the agency, National Geographic Creative before it was shut down after the @disney acquisition. I have several images in the official National Geographic Image Collection, and contribute to imagebanks of @visitgreenland, @swedense, Costa Brava Tourism among others.   • Dear Lola, I just finished your book “In Every Mirror She’s Black” @ineverymirror and I’m absolutely speechless. You’ve captured Swedish culture so well, especially in the fault line between the outsider and the Swedish society - that incredibly frustrating wall of glass that gets thrown in people’s faces as soon as they dare exist in any other capacity than the slippery unwritten rules proscribed for that context. And how this is exacerbated by race. It also seems you know all the Swedish institutions and systems inside and out, it’s incredibly refreshing to read your clear and unapologetic analysis. I think all of us who have moved here as outsiders keep asking ourselves why it’s so ridiculously difficult to find a way to fit in/level up to impossible invisible standards. My personal favorite is the courageous Muna, you’ve captured her incredibly well and she makes my whole heart ache. Wishing you all the best, Ida @ida_abuabdou Why I do what I do 🙏🏽 #humbled

  • Last night, my kids and I spent hours together looking through old photos and videos of themselves, laughing and remembering wonderful times. Like when they started crawling, walking, screaming gibberish, dancing… Then we stumbled across one of my absolute favorite photos… Me and their dad sitting under a red and white umbrella during our engagement photo shoot in May 2009. Before that, we’d been together since 2006. 17 years. The kids were utterly fascinated by those chic photos, how we both looked, the height difference when we embraced, the laughter and joy emanating from them. Then my son (the younger sibling) asked me why I chose to leave. He still sees me as the one who chose to make us all sad by breaking us apart. Two years post divorce, my daughter fully understands why we eroded, but my son is still processing in his own way. Trying to reconcile all that past joy together with our current reality. Divorce is often a messy process of grieving what could have been, especially when kids are involved. Oftentimes we lose, shrink and erode ourselves because societal pressure or culture wants us to stay for the sake of the kids… the most dangerous thing parents can model in terms of skewing what a safe and loving relationship looks like. Generation X knows this as many grew up with parents who stayed for their sakes. Divorce also means showing them that they are our utmost priority, they were born from love, and that we would continue to make them feel fully loved and safe. Even if the very best yet heartbreaking way to do that is apart. #divorce

Dear Lola, I just finished your book “In Every Mirror She’s Black” @ineverymirror and I’m absolutely speechless. You’ve captured Swedish culture so well, especially in the fault line between the outsider and the Swedish society - that incredibly frustrating wall of glass that gets thrown in people’s faces as soon as they dare exist in any other capacity than the slippery unwritten rules proscribed for that context. And how this is exacerbated by race. It also seems you know all the Swedish institutions and systems inside and out, it’s incredibly refreshing to read your clear and unapologetic analysis. I think all of us who have moved here as outsiders keep asking ourselves why it’s so ridiculously difficult to find a way to fit in/level up to impossible invisible standards. My personal favorite is the courageous Muna, you’ve captured her incredibly well and she makes my whole heart ache. Wishing you all the best, Ida @ida_abuabdou Why I do what I do 🙏🏽 #humbled

I usually take all of August off but this year, I’m starting one week earlier. I’ll be mostly offline from July 21 - August 21. Lord knows I’m ready. I usually take all of August off but this year, I’m starting one week earlier. I’ll be mostly offline from July 21 - August 21. Lord knows I’m ready. Last night, my kids and I spent hours together looking through old photos and videos of themselves, laughing and remembering wonderful times. Like when they started crawling, walking, screaming gibberish, dancing… Then we stumbled across one of my absolute favorite photos… Me and their dad sitting under a red and white umbrella during our engagement photo shoot in May 2009. Before that, we’d been together since 2006. 17 years. The kids were utterly fascinated by those chic photos, how we both looked, the height difference when we embraced, the laughter and joy emanating from them. Then my son (the younger sibling) asked me why I chose to leave. He still sees me as the one who chose to make us all sad by breaking us apart. Two years post divorce, my daughter fully understands why we eroded, but my son is still processing in his own way. Trying to reconcile all that past joy together with our current reality. Divorce is often a messy process of grieving what could have been, especially when kids are involved. Oftentimes we lose, shrink and erode ourselves because societal pressure or culture wants us to stay for the sake of the kids… the most dangerous thing parents can model in terms of skewing what a safe and loving relationship looks like. Generation X knows this as many grew up with parents who stayed for their sakes. Divorce also means showing them that they are our utmost priority, they were born from love, and that we would continue to make them feel fully loved and safe. Even if the very best yet heartbreaking way to do that is apart. #divorce
