  • It started with a vision... I SEE YOU.

That vision birthed ÅFRÖSWÈ̩DÉ̩ @theafroswede

Now thanks to an Opstart Idea pilot grant from the Nordic Culture Fund @nordiskkulturfond, I am thrilled to announce that this visual storytelling project will be expanding across the Nordics as ÅFRÖNỌ̀RDÍC - @theafronordic.official

Inspired by the ÅFRÖSWÈ̩DÉ̩ photography project which was shortlisted for the @globalpeacephotoaward, ÅFRÖNỌ̀RDÍC visualizes and celebrates what integration feels like, when we can seamlessly blend all facets of our identities without having to choose one or the other.

I am grateful to announce our first local community partners - @diversify.global in Norway and @finnishafricansociety / @studiopeee in Finland - as we continue to bridge and connect the Afro-Nordic diaspora in this visual celebration. Thank you for coming onboard!

Truly grateful I get to do this. My heart is full 🙏🏽❤️

  • Friends, family and colleagues in California - I’ll be at the inaugural Santa Barbara Literary Festival @sb_literary_festival from May 2-3 organized by powerhouse @lesliezemeckis and her wonderful team.

Keynote speakers include Walter Mosley, @kimmichelerichardson, Chris Whitaker, and Steve Rowley - https://www.santabarbaraliteraryfestival.org/

I’ll be speaking on an incredible panel alongside @byronlanedotcom, Lisa Alvarez, and @christinahammondsreed, and we will explore belonging, resilience, and the courage to be seen in spaces never built with us in mind - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/survival-identity-the-stories-we-tell-santa-barbara-literary-festival-tickets-1983491858543

I will also be teaching a workshop titled ”Plot, Pace, and Place” on how to write fiction like a travel writer. From research and experimenting to ground-level travel writing that strips away adjectives and adverbs to transparently show a place, this workshop will share examples and practical tips using all active senses, based on my expertise as an award-winning travel writer and how I build my fictional worlds as an international bestselling author - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/workshop-lola-akinmade-plot-pace-and-place-tickets-1984657968409?aff=ebdssbdestsearch

Listened to interesting presentations including this question from Caroline Fletcher of @ey_sweden Studios -> “Would you trust AI with your life?”

Whether you want to face it or not, you already trust the quality of your life to AI (from GPS and digital calculators to more), so it is crucial to “humanize the path” forward.

And as always, rockstar moderator and friend @steph.darvill gave a flawless performance on stage 💜

Until next year, thank you @witsweden community!

  • Easter break 🇸🇪 🇩🇰

  • Very few exhibitions move me to tears…and the impeccably curated HAIR IS ART: HAIR IS IDENTITY experience by @fulanibraidbar did just that.

A singular one of its kind in Sweden, I visited the exhibit in Malmö which chronicles the cultural importance of African hairstyles and the deep rooted identity they embody 🖤

According to the exhibit, it “centres Afro hair as artistic expression, cultural knowledge, and lived identity. Through sculptural wigs, braided forms, photography, and live performance, it invites visitors to experience hair beyond aesthetics - as heritage, resistance, and self-definition. Drawing from Afrofuturist thinking, the exhibition weaves together past, present, and future.”

Can’t wait to see this fabulous exhibit travel across the Nordics 🙌🏾 🌟

Fantastic vision @arietawho @mimir0se and all your wonderful collaborators! 🔥

  • Happy Easter 🙏🏽💛
He lives forever in our hearts.

#Easter

Photo shot in Ravenna, Italy
  • On Ash Wednesday, there were less than twenty people in the service I popped into.

I cried because I knew why the pews were empty. I myself rarely go in person these days and listen to sermons virtually.

The evil people have done in God’s name and keep doing in God’s name continues to drive people away.

People who need that love the most. Who need to see God’s reflection in their neighbors.

Hate, exclusion, delusion, xenophobia, wars, genocides, supremacy… the list, long.

All done in God’s name. The very definition of heresy.

On this Good Friday as I remember a savior who paid the ultimate price, my prayer is that my life continues to be a vessel through my work, purpose, talent.

That even when I stumble, God always reaches out Their hand of love to guide me back.

A savior who hypocrites today will mistreat the very same way because he was brown. A foreigner in their midst.

That is really all I can do.

Live a life of testimony so people can rediscover God’s grace and goodness 🙏🏽

#GoodFriday

Loved catching up with friends and colleagues and making new connections 🌟

Listened to interesting presentations including this question from Caroline Fletcher of @ey_sweden Studios -> “Would you trust AI with your life?”

Whether you want to face it or not, you already trust the quality of your life to AI (from GPS and digital calculators to more), so it is crucial to “humanize the path” forward.

And as always, rockstar moderator and friend @steph.darvill gave a flawless performance on stage 💜

Until next year, thank you @witsweden community!

Did you know I used to be a programmer and then a system architect? A system architect is a senior-level IT professional who creates the blueprint, design, and strategy for complex computer systems and integrations while communicating with each stakeholder in their own specific lingo -> from the legal dept and UX teams to developers and C-suite <- to make sure everyone is fully on board. So, one of my absolute favorite events of the year in Stockholm to fully geek out at is @witsweden 💜 Loved catching up with friends and colleagues and making new connections 🌟 Listened to interesting presentations including this question from Caroline Fletcher of @ey_sweden Studios -> “Would you trust AI with your life?” Whether you want to face it or not, you already trust the quality of your life to AI (from GPS and digital calculators to more), so it is crucial to “humanize the path” forward. Very few exhibitions move me to tears…and the impeccably curated HAIR IS ART: HAIR IS IDENTITY experience by @fulanibraidbar did just that.

On Ash Wednesday, there were less than twenty people in the service I popped into.
