  • ”I remember as a kid, whenever my mother served my meals, I would bend low to smell it,” Bozidar tells me over homemade Slavonian and Dalmatian tapas at @alamaka_tapas_dubrovnik in the heart of old town. ”What’s wrong with it?!” he remembers his mother asking with a tinge of irritation.

For Bozidar, even as a child, it was the experience of eating, more so than the actual meal. ”Growing food is such a honourable thing and, like love, the process of cooking for someone and sharing a meal together is so personal and intimate,” he says.

We’re sitting in a 500-year-old-plus building, a former storage cellar, konoba. Over time, people started socializing in a family’s konoba over smoked meats and homemade wine. The most popular houses organically became taverns and the city’s first restaurants. So now, the term konoba is used for any restaurant serving traditional food.

As a WSET-3 certified sommelier, Bozidar has been in the travel and hospitality space for over 20 years. Well known as the @croatian_wine_guy (and now, the Croatian @tomhardy), Bozidar guided me around town for some of the best bites including fresh burek (originally Bosnian) at @holyburek, tasty black cuttlefish risotto and brudet (seafood stew) at @kopundbk, and his pick for the best gelato in town, @gianni_dubrovnik, including sampling wines made from Maraština and Pošip grapes.

I heard about the Good Food Festival which celebrates artisans, chefs, and restaurants from all around the region, including hosting an iconic Dubrovnik Table along its Stradun where residents and travellers can dine together in one of the largest yet intimate homecooked tables (get in here, @guinnessworldrecords).

As for Bozidar, he runs a wine club alongside other sommeliers and wine enthusiasts where they do blind tasting to analyze and review various global wines to keep sharpening their instincts.

Thank you @experiencedubrovnik @grad.dubrovnik.official and @croatiafulloflife for organizing this culinary experience on such short notice, and to Bozidar for your incredible hospitality, invaluable expertise, and warmth. 🇭🇷 ❤️

  • My Croatia writing retreat for one in collaboration with Valamar Lacroma, Dubrovnik @valamarhotels.

As an international bestselling author, I do my best work by the sea... The Adriatic Sea.

I draw inspiration from all around me... Light, food, energy. It’s often part self-care, part mind-care.

When I let my creativity flow to the sound of lapping waves. Taking in incredible sunsets.

Only to do it all again come morning. Over and over again.

This is my sacred place. This is where I write.

Location: @kopundbk

Back from a wonderful culinary tour led by the one and only @croatian_wine_guy as a guest of @experiencedubrovnik while in town working on a new project.

While I sort through photos and notes for an upcoming post, I wanted to share this particular capture since I’m usually behind the camera. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen myself laugh this way.

Good food, great company, and gratitude that I get to do this. To share stories through words and images.

Thank you Bozidar for the photo 🙏🏽
