It’s definitely been awhile since I’ve updated my blog. Mostly because I’ve been busy birthing an adorable baby girl earlier this month and settling into some nice mommy routines. I’m still processing it all, moving through various stages of surrealism, floating between reality, dreamlike states, and fully understanding just how my life has changed once again for the better.
I love when dreams come true. I also love visionaries who actively pursue their dreams and paths without being swayed by (in my opinion) unnecessary peripheral noise or static.
That’s how amazing success stories are born.
For fellow travel writer, blogger, and friend, Nellie Huang, it was starting up her own magazine, and what an impressive start it’s been. We all waited with bated breath to see just how the new magazine would look and feel when Nellie announced last year that it was indeed in the works, and I couldn’t be more excited for her.
The photograph above of Siberian Huskies in Swedish Lapland is currently being featured as a double-page “Big Picture” spread in the current Jan/Feb 2012 issue of National Geographic Traveller (see feature), and I almost passed out when the assistant art director sent me my PDF copy.
My plan was to have my focus word all picked out by January 1st and have a post ready, but it didn’t happen. The word hadn’t reached me yet. I really didn’t want to force it. So I waited for it to come organically, and it did.
2011 started out in my typical wanderlusting style. January and February found me traversing Swedish Lapland on assignment covering indigenous Sami culture, Jokkmokk market, fun outdoor activities like dogsledding, reviewing the TreeHotel (pictured above), as well as hanging with a certain crown princess (here’s proof).
In early August, I created a post that shed some light on how it really was to be a freelancer (writer, photographer, editor, photojournalist, AND blogger) in this increasingly competitive work climate.
